In the near future, a wide array of vehicles, from city buses to U.S. fighter jets, will run on an emission-reducing fuel product. Surprisingly, these vehicles will be powered using an animal fat-based fuel produced in Louisiana.

Dynamic Fuels LLC, a joint venture between Tyson Foods and Syntroleum Corp., selected Geismar, La., as the site for a new refinery that will produce renewable diesel and jet fuels from animal fats.

"It's a new kind of facility for a new kind of fuel," said Gov. Bobby Jindal. "This is the first fuel production facility of this kind in the entire United States, and we are very proud to have it right here in Louisiana. Developing alternative sources of energy is a vital part of the future of our nation's economy, and as such, this investment here in Louisiana will serve as a catalyst for greater business expansion and job creation."

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility was held in October 2008, with fuel production scheduled to begin in 2010. The refinery will cost $127 million to build, and capital funding is expected to include $100 million in GO Zone bonds previously approved by the Louisiana State Bond Commission.

The fuel will be ultra-clean, renewable, and company officials expect the product to create high demand in the marketplace.

"We believe our fuels will appeal to the operators of fleet vehicles and city buses who want to reduce emissions, as well as the military and commercial airlines seeking ultra-clean renewable jet fuel," said Jeffrey Bigger, director of Dynamic Fuels' Management Committee.
