Founded in Galliano, La., in 1960, Edison Chouest Offshore has
more than tripled in size since 1993, making it the fastest growing
offshore vessel service company in the world. And because of the
state's competitive business environment, the company continues to
grow and prosper.
In 2008, Edison Chouest announced that it will expand its
shipyard operations at the Port of Terrebonne, a $100 million
capital investment that will result in 1,000 new, full-time jobs.
The state will provide $10 million to support infrastructure
improvements at the Port of Terrebonne to accommodate the company's
expansion investment. The port will also receive a $4 million grant
from the Governor's Rapid Response Fund to complete the
infrastructure improvements.
"This exciting project is a terrific example of the
opportunities we can generate by supporting the growth of existing
Louisiana businesses," said Louisiana Economic Development
Secretary Stephen Moret.
Through its sister company LaShip, Edison Chouest will
manufacture vessels with hull lengths greater than 350 feet to
accommodate the increasing needs of the deepwater offshore oil and
gas industry.
"We at Edison Chouest Offshore are proud of our Louisiana
heritage and are excited about the creation of 1,000 jobs in
Terrebonne Parish," said President and CEO Gary Chouest.
The expansion project earned Edison Chouest a 2009 Corporate
Investment & Community Impact (CiCi) Award. Created by Trade
& Industry Development magazine, community impact awards are
given to companies whose projects had the most notable impact on
their communities in a given year. Each project is judged on
specific criteria, including number of new jobs created, number of
current jobs retained and how the project affected the
community.
Edison Chouest's proprietary design and building capabilities
have propelled the company to the top of the offshore boat service
industry. The company provides the largest number of
special-purpose vessels to support the U.S. government and operates
the largest independently owned fleet of offshore research
vessels.
